It’s helpful if you can complete your health intake electronically prior to your scheduled appointment time. This will list your health history, past/present injuries and other physical conditions to determine that you receive the best possible massage experience and that massage is appropriate for your health. (this will be emailed to you when your appointment is scheduled. If you don't see it in your inbox, please check your spam folder.)
When you arrive, we’ll talk about your goals for the session. This will determine which parts of your body require massage. A typical full-body session will include work on your back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck, and shoulders. You will not be touched on or near your genitals (male or female) or breasts (female).
Your massage or bodywork session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. (Some people like to talk during a massage. Some prefer to relax without conversation. Do what feels best.) Soft music may be played to help you relax. You will lie on a table especially designed for your comfort. My massage table is padded and has a heating blanket beneath the bottom sheet, which can be adjusted to your preference.
Most massage and bodywork techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed; however, it is entirely up to you what you want to wear. You should undress to your level of comfort. You will be properly draped during the entire session to keep you warm and comfortable while ensuring that your modesty is respected at all times. Only the area being massaged will be uncovered. I will leave the room while you undress and get on the table between the clean sheets.
Your session will start with broad, flowing strokes that will help calm your nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension. As your body becomes relaxed, pressure will gradually be increased to relax specific areas and relieve areas of muscular tension. Usually, a light oil or lotion is used to allow your muscles to be massaged without causing excessive friction to the skin. It also helps hydrate your skin. During the massage, make yourself comfortable. If needed, I will either gently move you or tell you what is needed throughout the session (such as lifting your arm). Many people just close their eyes and completely relax. Please let me know immediately if you feel any discomfort so that another approach may be taken. Massage and bodywork are most effective when your body is not resisting.
In addition, please speak up if, at any time during the session, you have feedback on pressure, room or table temperature, lighting…it’s my goal to provide the massage session right for you.
Once your massage therapy session is complete, I will leave the room so you may re-dress.
Most people feel very relaxed after a massage session. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days. It is recommended you drink plenty of water following your massage. If possible, allow relaxation time prior to and after the session. Hot tubs, steam baths and saunas can assist in the relaxation process.
